Room 100

Sound Installation, 21 min 35 sec. loop, 2011

Room 100 is a 21min, un-edited field recording of Room 100 at the New York Public Library (Main Building). The NYPL Microforms Section, Room 100, provides access to over 350,000 microfilm reels and 3,000,000 microfiche resources in the humanities and social sciences. Types of materials include microfilm copy of 12,000 periodical back-files, collections of antiquarian monographs, historical pamphlets, incunabula, and many unique archives of diverse national and international organizations. The work focuses on exposing a system of archival and secrecy via its storing & retrieval acoustics. The field recording reveals a world of private and repetitive actions, of perceived private actions yet performed in a very public space.
